01 / The goal has a life outside the gym
The goal has a life outside the gym.
Dean is sixty and plays live in a band. When I think about the purpose of his training, that part of his life matters.
He wants to keep doing something he enjoys. His story gives us a reason to talk about strength in terms of what it can support beyond a workout.
A training goal does not have to begin with a particular look. Sometimes the starting point is an activity you want to keep in your life.
02 / His knees are part of the conversation
His knees are part of the conversation.
Dean deals with troublesome knees. That is relevant to the way we discuss his training and the things he wants to stay able to do.
When we talk about what he wants from training, being able to keep doing the things he enjoys is central. His knees are part of that starting point.
For someone else with knee difficulties, the circumstances and any guidance from their treating clinician may be different. Dean’s story is about his own reason for being here.
03 / Strength with somewhere to go
Strength with somewhere to go.
Playing in a band is part of Dean’s identity and enjoyment. It gives the conversation about staying capable a specific meaning.
That is something I want to understand about the people I coach. What are you trying to keep doing? What would you like to feel more able to do? Where does training fit into that?
The answer can help make the work feel relevant. For Dean, life on and off stage is part of the reason behind it.
04 / A different starting point, a familiar purpose
A different starting point, a familiar purpose.
Watch Dean’s conversation in the video above. This profile introduces the reason I wanted to share it: training connected to the life someone wants to keep enjoying.
Lee’s story explores another return to training with physical limitations in the picture. Their circumstances are different, but both stories make room for goals that extend beyond appearance.
There is value in asking what matters to you before deciding what your training should look like. Dean gives us a very clear place to start.
